Tips on: What Burglars Steal and Where They Look by JAQX Home Security

It is vital to know what burglars steal and where they look in order to protect your home and valuables. Burglars mostly are just lazy thieves who prefer items that are easy to carry and which can be sold off quickly. For example, a single diamond ring is not only easy to carry, but can be worth a dozen used TVs.

But don’t confuse laziness with efficiency. The average burglary takes less than 10 minutes because most thieves have their wish list of items to steal and where to find them;

  • Cash
  • Small electronics, like laptops, gaming systems, and tablets
  • Guns
  • Jewelry
  • Liquor
  • Medication
  • Personal identification: Stealing your identity means the thief can keep coming back for more without an in-person visit.

People mostly keep their valuables in bedrooms, so it is obvious that burglars make their first stop there. They’ll surely check the dresser, closet and even the medicine cabinet to looking for valuable loot.

The second target for burglars is Kid’s bedrooms, which is often stocked with electronic games, computers and other sought-after items. Then comes the family living room, home office, or study which are the great places to find personal financial information, and more electronics. If there’s time, the burglar may detour through the basement or garage on the way out. Power tools and other small items are anonymous and easy to pawn.

Protect your home with a JAQX Secured Smart Home.

Over 80% of would-be burglars said that they would leave immediately if they detected an alarm system in place.  The rest would try to disable alarm systems by smashing the security panel or turning off the power.  Those tactics don’t work with JAQX, as our Smart Hub replaces the bulky wall panel and can be placed in a more hidden location.  Additionally our 24 hour battery and cellular back up system can keep your home safe even when the power is out.

Now that you know what burglars steal and where they look, you can make their work more difficult by installing a security system like JAQX, while keeping personal valuables and information stored in less obvious places like a locked filing cabinet or home safe.

Crime Rate is greater in Summer

US Dept. of Justice in 2014 made a study where there was a definite correlation between the season and the crime rate. Researchers have found that the crime rates are much less in the fall and winter, whereas greater in summer. Summer may be the best time of the year for you to enjoy vacation, but it is also the best time for the burglars to fulfill their desires. Few of the crime rates in summers were significant:

  • Burglary: 11% higher.
  • Household larceny (theft of property outside the home): 8% higher.

There was a 35% increase for major crime types in some cities. The ratio of crime is larger in cold climates but majority of areas see the rate increase at peak in summer when temperature is high. Several explanations are also given by Law enforcement experts and psychologists for the increased rate in summer.

One of the attractive reason can be people tend to travel more in the summer and empty their houses. Also, social media can prove to be a great source of information regarding their vacation itinerary. This personal information is enough for the burglars to decide when and how long they can enjoy sitting on your couch.

People also leave their windows open during during hot weather. The bikes, patio furniture, laptops, and other valuables are often outside and unattended as people mostly spend time outside home. So this can be the add on opportunity for thieves.

The most important thing to remember with property crimes is that criminals don’t take vacations as you do. In-fact, they wait for you to take yours and let your guard down. Summer months are the perfect time for you to know your neighbors. That makes it much easier to spot suspicious people or vehicles that may be casing the neighborhood.

As we know it is better to keep a bad thing from happening than it is to fix the bad thing once it has happened. Few things to keep in mind and then you are good to go and enjoy worry free vacation. So always keep your doors and windows locked, not leaving any valuables outside, Secure your home when you’re away, Keep your vacation and travel plans quiet. Ask a friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your house, collect the mail, and keep the grass cut.

Be alert as you can never be sure who is watching or talking. An offhand comment by a co-worker to a friend or family member that “so-and-so” from my office is headed to the Galapagos this week for an awesome vacation may fall on the wrong ears. Share less to become safe more.

Finally, remember that fire and/or water damage often cause more financial losses than theft.  A burst pipe spews water quickly, but even a leaky dishwasher hose or hot water heater can cause a lot of damage in a week that you’ll have to replace.  That’s why we recommend using smoke alarms and flood sensors along with your basic JAQX system. The entry sensors and cameras protect you from intruders, our smoke and water monitoring protects you from dangers inside your home.

Have a great, safe summer!
